In this episode of BeautyChat, I takes a left turn and workshops what it is that makes someone beautiful, with one of my oldest friends, Bec Monin.
Bec and I have been friends since we met in kindergarten – nearly 44 years ago! I consider Bec to be incredibly beautiful – she is warm, compassionate and has an inner sparkle! True inner beauty!
Bec is a mom to three gorgeous kids and a devoted teacher. She has a strong Christian faith and is dedicated to her church community. She is also actively involved in mission trips to the indigenous community of Yarrabah in North Queensland.
What The Girls Think About Beauty
Now, as someone who loves lipstick and hairspray, this episode is clearly not about bagging out makeup and skincare. I have cupboards full of it! And I am definitely not saying that it isn’t lovely to pop on some lipstick and get doled up. So please don’t interpret this as a criticism of those who love to do so – because I’m going to put up my hand and let you know that I really do!
But what I’m talking about is how I believe inner beauty – a kind heart, compassionate soul and generous spirit – is one of the most important aspects of being beautiful.
When we think about what makes someone beautiful, what do we consider? Is it their hair, skin or eyelashes? Their lipstick – or their face. No, it actually isn’t. I think beauty is a glow that someone gives off – the warmth that they have on the inside – their smiling eyes, kind heart and warm gestures.
Bec nominates her 19 year old daughter as teaching her everything she knows about beauty. Laura is brave, bold and a true individual – Bec’s definition of beauty!
Authenticity – one of the Silver Linings of 2020
It may not feel like it at the moment, but I believe there are silver linings to this ‘annus horribilis’. In my opinion, the most important one is authenticity and a desire to keep things real. Thanks to the intrusion of Zoom calls into our lounge rooms, many of us have peeled off layers this year, sick of the lighting and filters that social media have encouraged. So, I believe we have an opportunity to redefine what is beautiful.
What Does The Research Say?
In 2019, Ipsos undertook research to ascertain what makes someone beautiful. They surveyed more than 19,000 men and women around the world across 27 countries asking them to rate the importance of 19 characteristics of beauty which included hair styling, body weight, wisdom and happiness.
Encouragingly, in every country intrinsic characteristics outranked physical characteristics for both men and women. Physical attributes including facial appearance, body weight and shape came much lower in the rankings while happiness, kindness, dignity and confidence appeared at the top!
An Inspirational Quote (or two) for you…
‘Exterior beauty without the depth of a kind soul is merely decoration.’ – Vanessa Quintero
‘It’s [beauty] a kind of radiance. People who possess a true inner beauty, their eyes are a little brighter, their skin a little more dewy. They vibrate at a different frequency.’ – Cameron Diaz
“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”– Audrey Hepburn
“Inner beauty should be the most important part of improving one’s self.” – Priscilla Presley
How I feel about myself is more important than how I look. Feeling confident, being comfortable in your skin – that’s what really makes you beautiful.” – Bobbi Brown
“It is not fancy hair, gold jewellery, or fine clothes that should make you beautiful. No, your beauty should come from within you – the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. This beauty will never disappear, and it is worth very much to God.” – Peter 3:3-4, Holy Bible
Inner Beauty Is Incredibly Attractive
Bec and I both agree that a person who ‘glows from the inside’, who has a warm heart and a kind soul is truly beautiful. A beautiful person makes you feel better after you have spent time with them. These are attributes that will not deteriorate with age!!
This is something that I try and weave into conversations with my boys constantly and will always continue to do so.
